Volunteering
On behalf of the Extended Schools Team and the City of Sunderland schools,
we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for expressing an
interest in becoming a Study Support Volunteer.
‘Study Support’ or ‘out-of-school-hours learning’ is learning
activity outside normal lessons which young people, (aged 4-18 years) take
part in voluntarily. Its purpose is to improve young people’s
motivation, build self-esteem and help them to become more effective
learners. Above all it aims to raise achievement.
If you are unemployed, retired, a student or even if you just wish to
enhance you career prospects you could be a volunteer. Anyone with time to
spare can volunteer. By doing this you could gain valuable experience by
doing something useful in your spare time. Volunteers will assist
teachers and other non-teaching staff to deliver Study Support Activities
in schools and other related establishments. Their main duties will
include:
- To undertake tasks appropriate to the activity
- To promote a high standard of behaviour
- To listen to and interact with pupils
All volunteers will need to be CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) checked.
We will pay the fee for this once you have decided you would like to
become a volunteer.
How Many Hours do you need to do:
- That would be entirely up to you and the school you are placed in to
come to an agreement on. One of the best things about voluntary work
is that it is extremely flexible. You can do as many Hours as you
like, from morning, lunchtime, afternoon, evening, weekends or
holidays or two days a week or even more!
- A chance to meet new people and try something new
- The opportunity to develop skills, build confidence and increase
your employability. Volunteering can give you esteem, discipline and
new skills all of which make you more employable. By volunteering you
can demonstrate that you are proactive, dedicated and willing to play
the role of a good all rounder.
- Valuable work experience to enhance you CV. For people who want a
career change, volunteering can give you the opportunity to learn
about the sector you are interested in and gives you the chance to
gain useful work experience.
- An up to date professional reference.
- Put something back in the community - a lot of Study Support Clubs
would not exist without volunteers.
