Sunderland should be a place where every child and young person has high aspirations and has the best opportunities to help them achieve their full potential.

The Government, through its change for children programme external link'Every Child matters' consulted with young people on how their lives could be improved.

They told the government they wanted to:

  • Be Healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic well-being

The aim of the Council's Children's Service is to improve the lives of every child, young person and family in Sunderland.  It is also to help children and young people  to develop the skills they will need to become well-balanced adults; that they will gain the knowledge and judgement to lead fulfilling and useful personal, social and working lives.

Our local vision, through the external linkChildren's Trust, is "Working together to improve life chances and aspirations for each child and young person in Sunderland".

To successfully achieve this vision we have brought together the council's responsibilities for education and social services for children, young people and their families, and some health services from the external linkTeaching Primary Care Trust.
