Sunderland City Council’s Education and Social Care Services has received praise from Ofsted and the Commission for Social Care after taking part in the first round of the Annual Performance Assessment (APA) 2005 earlier this year achieving a three out of four rating in each category assessed.

The Annual Performance Assessment looks at education, social care and children’s services provision across the city. The report and ratings are based on five outcomes identified in the green paper, Every Child Matters. These are:

Be healthy

Stay safe

Enjoy and achieve

Make a positive contribution

Achieve economic well-being

Within each outcome Sunderland City Council was found to be performing well. Areas in which the authority were found to have particular strengths include, health promotion initiatives in schools, well managed child protection systems and support and training for child protection in schools, rates of improvement at Key Stages 1 and 2, permanent exclusion rates in secondary schools and the restorative justice system.

The report also identifies areas where improvements could continue to be made, including aspects of looked after children, teenage pregnancy and attainment at Key Stage 3.

From 2005 Annual Performance Assessment’s will be undertaken every year in children’s services authorities by the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) and the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted).
