What was the project about?
The Public Library Service of Sunderland City Council was awarded a
grant from NEMLAC (North East Museums, Libraries and Archives Council)
towards funding a five-month project to develop a Local Heritage
Strategy for Sunderland Public Libraries.
What is "Local Heritage" and who will the
project affect?
For the purposes of this project, “heritage” encompasses everything
that relates to the origins of a people or community and their
cultural identity. For example it includes: the built heritage (including
streets), historic landmarks and spaces, the natural environment,
archaeology, art, archives, artefacts, oral history (including minority
languages and dialects), memories, and social values, traditions and
customs.
For the purpose of this project, “local heritage”
encompasses the heritage of all people who live or lived within the present
administrative boundary of Sunderland City Council. If you require any further details, please contact the City
Library and Arts Centre, Fawcett Street, Sunderland, SR1 1RE;
