Food in Schools

Aim
The Food in Schools (FIS) programme aims to encourage children and young people to take an interest in healthy foods and educate them around the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Pupils are given the knowledge and practical experience to be able to choose a healthy lifestyle which will help prevent diseases such as obesity and coronary heart disease later in life.

What we do
We are currently working with a small number of schools across the city. Each school receives a 12-week intervention programme based on four main topic areas:
  • Growing - From Seed to Salad
  • Change for Life
  • Food and Fitness
  • Food through the Curriculum

The programme takes a targeted approach to promoting healthy lifestyles and works closely with the wider community and parents to improve cookery skills, physical activity and growing your own fruit and vegetables.

Healthy Schools
The National Healthy Schools programme is a government initiative to improve the overall health and achievement of children and young people. The work of the FIS Team helps schools achieve Healthy School Status, which is an increasingly important aspect of Ofsted inspections and directly linked with the Every Child Matters agenda.
