Sport and Leisure, have worked on various recent play projects and include the following:
Keir Hardie Play Area, Fencehouses


The  redevelopment of the existing play area at Keir Hard, Fencehouses opened in October 2008. The project which involved consultation with local young, Dubmire Primary School, Barnardos, Community Police Team and local people in the area. The funding for the project is from a 106 agreement.

Rickleton Play Area, Washington


The new play area in Rickleton Village opened in December 2007. The project which involved consultation with local young people cost £75,500 with funding from developer contribution, £4,500 from Sunderland City Council’s Community Chest and £2,500 was received from Gentoo.

Sunderland City Council were approached by Rickleton Residents Association to provide a play area for the local community in the Rickleton area. Sunderland City Council worked in partnership with The Tyne & Wear Play Association. The partnership has worked closely with the members of the school council and local children from Rickleton Primary School throughout the project.

Duke of Albany Play Area, Washington


The play area at Duke of Albany Park was upgraded in September 2007. The project cost £24,939 to complete with funding from developer contribution.

Consultation was carried out with Gentoo Sunderland.

Fulwell Wheeled Sports Park, Fulwell


The Wheeled Sports Park opened in June 2007. The project cost £80,000 to complete with funding received from Barclays Spaces for Sport of £50,000 and further funding of £25,000 from Sunderland Council's Strategic Initiatives Budget with the remaining funding from Sunderland City Council.

Around one hundred youngsters presented a signed petition to Sunderland City Council requesting a skate park. We worked closely consulting with young people, representatives from local businesses, schools, community beat officer and local people.

Fulwell Wheeled Sports Park
Houghton Wheeled Sports Park, Houghton-le-Spring


The Wheeled Sports Park opened in July 2007. The project cost £80,000 to complete with funding from Barclays Spaces for Sports of £50,000 and further funding of £25,000 received from the Youth Opportunity and Youth Capital Fund with the remaining funding from Sunderland City Council.

Sunderland City Council received a petition from 203 young people requesting wheeled sports facility in the Houghton-le-Spring area. We worked closely consulting with the young people, parents, community beat officers and local people throughout the project.

Ryhope Recreation Park Play Area, Ryhope


The play area within Ryhope Recreation Park was upgraded in 2006-2007. The project cost £19,000 to complete with funding from developer contribution and further funding from Biffaward secured by the Ryhope Friends Group.

Consultation was carried out with Ryhope Infant School and the local youth provider.

King George Playing Field Dual Use Games Area (DUGA)
 

The DUGA within King George Playing Field replaced the existing basketball area in 2006-2007. The project cost £19,000 to complete with funding from developer contribution.


Consultation was carried out with Ryhope Infant School and the local youth provider .

Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), Hall Farm
 

The Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) opened in 2006. The project cost £40,000 to complete with funding from Sunderland Council's Strategic Initiatives Budget.

The MUGA is located on land adjacent to The Box Youth Project, a voluntary sector youth project. We worked closely consulting with the young people, community beat officers and local people throughout the project.
 

Hall Farm MUGA
Sunderland City Council have been awarded £2.1 million to invest in the future of play within the city.

There are 12 projects which will be completed in year 1 by March 2009 and will be suitable for children and young people (including those with disabilities), from 0-19 years of age.  For Further information on these project please follow this link Sunderland's Play Pathfinder Programme - Year 1 Projects.
