Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families launched
the Children’s Plan on 12 December 2007, with the vision to make this
the best place in the world for children to grow up.
The plan sets out the next steps the Government will take to support
parents, focus on the individual needs of every child, unlock the talents
of all our young people and deliver a world class education.
This will mean new play areas and youth clubs in every part of the
country, so that children and young people have things to do and places to
go outside school. For further information about the Children’s Plan

What is The Children's Plan: building brighter futures
The new agenda will support better and safer outdoor play spaces that
children can access by themselves, free of charge, with a focus on 8-13
year olds. The total investment over the next three years is £225m.
The Department for Children, School and Families (DCSF) announced the
first 20 pathfinder local authorities at the beginning of April, and the
second wave of pathfinders will be announced later in the year. In
the first year of funding, 65 local authorities will either become play
pathfinders or playbuilders.
The Children’s Plan highlights how the DCSF is going to achieve the
Governments agenda by putting the needs of families, children and young
people at the centre of everything they do. The DCSF listened to
parents, teachers and professionals, as well as to children and young
people themselves. They told them what they thought was working, and what
more they thought needed to be done.
The Children's Plan will:
- Strengthen support for all families during the formative early years
of their children’s lives
- Take the next steps in achieving world class schools and an
excellent education for every child
- Involve parents fully in their children’s learning
- Help to make sure that young people have interesting and exciting
things to do outside of school
- Provide more places for children to play safely.
