Registered Social Landlords
There are 21 Registered
Social Landlords in Sunderland. The largest of these is
Gentoo
formerly known as Sunderland Housing Group. Formed
in March 2001 from the transfer of 36,342 former Local Authority
properties this group has taken over the landlord role from Sunderland
City Council. This was carried out by Stock
Transfer.
Registered Social
Landlords (RSLs) are independent, not for profit organisations – most are Housing Associations, but there are also
Trusts, Co-operatives and Companies. In the UK there are over 2,000
Registered Social Landlords that together own about one million homes.
Since the late 1980s
almost all new social housing has been provided by Registered Social
Landlords and Local Authorities were given the option of transferring
their stock to Registered Social Landlords. Registered Social
Landlords can raise private finance for new
schemes and for investing in stock transferred from Local Authorities.
Larger Registered Social
Landlords have paid staff, however the smaller ones have a committee or
board made up of volunteers. The board may include tenants,
representatives from Local Authorities and Community Groups, business
people and Politicians.
