Bank Holiday Collection Times
For the bank holidays in May and August, bins will be collected one day late with the Friday collection taking place on the Saturday.
The Council will:
- Carry out weekly collection of waste from
households either in your wheeled bin or in the case of a small number of
premises in the Washington area plastic sacks. Collections may vary
during the Christmas, New Year, Easter Period and other Bank Holidays. You
will be notified of any changes in collection arrangements in advance either
by means of a self adhesive label on your bin or a note through your door.
- On the collection day, wheel your bin to the collection point before
7.30am. Once a regular collection time has been established you will
be able to put your bin out accordingly. The collection point will
generally be as follows:
Terraced Properties - in the rear lane against the wall
Semi-detached Properties (older types) - on the pavement against the garden
or yard wall
Open Plan Estates - at the end of the drive or on the adjacent verge
Leave the bin with the handles facing the road
After emptying, the bin will be left at its collection point. You
should retrieve it and place it within your property as soon as possible
after collection
- Collect, free of charge, bulky items of
household waste or sacks of garden refuse or other waste which cannot be
accommodated in your wheeled bin. We will carry out 3 collections (of
8 items or less) in any one financial year (1st April to 31st March). We will advise you of an appointed
day for collection within 6 working days of when you make your request.

Furniture
Collection
Householders
who wish to make items of furniture available to be used by others may wish to
contact Community Furniture Service on 0191 549 4343.
Alternatively, a recently launched website called rag-and-bone.co.uk
links together people who have large or bulky household items that they no
longer require, with others who can give them a new home. Items,
which are still usable or repairable, are given away free-of-charge; they
simply need to be collected. To find out more, refer to:
rag-and-bone.co.uk
What you can do to help
You can help us maintain our service standards by:
- Making
full use of your bin. Break down boxes and other bulky items before
placing them in the bin
- Only
put your bin out on the day of collection.
- Do
not place sacks or boxes next to your bin. Make use of the special
collection service for extra refuse
- Retrieve
your bin as soon as possible after collection.
- Look
out for the revised collection days around bank holidays. We will
provide you with a leaflet or place a sticker on your bin to notify you of the revised days.
