Developers and Builders

When planning permission has been granted for a single or multiple development and work is about to commence on site you will need to contact the Street Naming and Numbering Team on the above number or via e-mail.

  1. The developer may suggest a name for consideration, however this must not be a duplicate or be a similar to a street name that already exists.  The Council policy is not to name streets after a person.  The developer will be consulted throughout until a name has been agreed.

Information required for a Street Naming and Numbering application

  2. Site Location Plan.
Site Layout Plan (indicating the plot numbers and entrance to site).

Where possible, dwellings will be numbered into the existing street.  Main streets will be numbered so that, when travelling away from the City Centre, odd numbers are on the left.  Properties will be numbered in a clockwise direction and will exclude No. 13.

  3. Consultations will be carried out with Royal Mail, Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service and Council Ward Members.  If no objections are received  the proposal will be put forward for approval.

  4. Once the naming and numbering of the properties has been approved the Street Naming and Numbering Team will contact the developer and consultees. A copy of the approved numbering site layout plan  will be supplied. Postcodes will be allocated by Royal Mail.

House Naming

The name of a property may be changed or a new name created. Please note the number must be kept.  The number must be displayed in a prominent position on the property, clearly visible from the road.  This is to allow emergency services to find the property.

How to Change a House Name

The following information from you, in writing or via e-mail is required.

Current address including postcode
The proposed name
A location plan of the property to allow the correct identification
A contact number

Names are not allowed to be duplicated or similar to that of another property in the area.

You must not make any changes to your address until you have had confirmation from the SN&NT that this is acceptable.

We will consult with Royal Mail and inform you when a decision has been made.

If you have any alterations to the proposed name or cancellations you must inform us without delay.

Once agreed Royal Mail will amend their records immediately but you must be aware that many companies' databases are only updated at 6 monthly intervals.
