Dangerous Building Report

In the case of dangerous structures or buildings, it is the responsibility of the Building Control Officer to take enforcement proceedings to ensure safety to any occupants or passers by.

Building Control Officers inspect all reported cases and deal with each case on merit or degree of danger in one of the following ways.

a) If the structure is not in imminent danger of collapse and a danger to life, an application may be made to the Magistrates Court to issue an order on the building owners to make it safe or demolish within a time limit, failing which the Council will be forced to carry out this work and charge the owner he cost incurred.

b) In more serious cases of danger to the public, the Council may serve a notice on the owner to carry out the required works immediately.  Failure to comply may result in the work being carried out and the owner charged with costs incurred.

Building Control Officers operate a 24 hour call out system in regulation to all dangerous buildings within the City of Sunderland. Important Notice If you wish to report a dangerous building or structure, please telephone 0191 5611550 during office hours. Outside normal office hours, a dangerous building or structure that presents a serious and immediate threat to public safety should be reported to the police by dialling 999 or Civic Centre Control room on 0191 5531999 .
