The Planning and Environment Service is responsible for all planning matters in Sunderland.  We strive to create a high quality, sustainable environment and protect the conditions in which people live and work. 

The responsibilities of the Service include:

  1. The control of development and the use of land and buildings in accordance with City Council Policies, approved plans and statutory requirements.
  2. The preparation and review of the Unitary Development Plan.
  3. The preparation and implementation of urban regeneration, economic development, land reclamation and environmental improvement schemes
  4. Assisting in the preparation of programmes designed to secure grant aid in support of the Council's economic development and environmental policies.
  5. The protection and enhancement of buildings of historic and architectural importance and the conservation and improvement of the City's countryside.
  6. The provision of advice, guidance and information to Members of the council, the public and other agencies concerned with property and development.
