Planning Policy Section


The Planning Policy Section is responsible for preparing and reviewing a range of development plans, compiling information about land-use in Sunderland, as well as co-ordinating the Council's approach to sustainable development.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparation of the Local Development Framework and review the Unitary Development Plan
  • Assisting with preparation and monitoring of the Regional Spatial Strategy
  • Liaising with neighbouring authorities and other agencies on strategic planning matters
  • Preparing supplementary planning guidance
  • The development of policies and proposals on strategic issues, including housing, employment land, green space and access to services.
  • Providing policy advice on development proposals
  • Developing the Sustainable Development Strategy for the City
  • Supporting the Council and Community to reduce their environmental impact
  • Supporting the Coalfield Communities Campaign
  • Developing sustainable transport and cycle network development.
  • Developing and maintaining the Land and Property Gazetteer and other business and land use development monitoring datasets
  • Producing land availability information, particularly relating to housing and business land
  • Providing an information service which includes Census and other statistical information, Ordnance Survey maps, and aerial photographs
