Demonstrating a supply of deliverable housing sites to accommodate additional housing an the city between April 2008 and March 2013. As required by Government planning policy in PPS3 "Housing" Sunderland City Council is preparing a Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) that will assess the deliverability and developability of housing sites over a 15 year period. This will support the policies of the Core Strategy and Housing Allocations development plan documents. The City's first SHLAA will be completed later this year.

In the interim, as also required by PPS3, the Council must be able to demonstrate that it can identify and maintain a 5 year supply of deliverable housing sites. The Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) has published guidance for undertaking this assessment.

The assessment considers the 5 year period from 1st April 2008 to 31st March 2013. It shows that the city has a range of deliverable housing sites that are more than capable of meeting the 5 year requirement, with over 80% being on previously developed 'brownfield' land.
