National Cycle Route 1 also forms part of a massive 3,500 mile North Sea Cycle Route, newly launched, which links England and Scotland to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and The Netherlands.  It is anticipated that this route will encourage thousands of cycling tourists from abroad to cycle into Sunderland, many staying overnight and/or visiting local attractions. Over the next few years it is intended to improve marketing of the route via a web-site, and to improve its visibility as it passes through the City.
