Where can I ride
locally?
It is now possible to reach eight
major City parks safely by bike:
Downhill Sports Complex - the City Boundary cycleway now
threads through this park and heads east to Witherwack and Fulwell;
Herrington Country Park - has 10km of walkways/cycleways, and
viewpoints across County Durham. Paths link to Penshaw New
Herrington and Herrington Burn, bridleways run to the north towards
Offerton and east to Middle Herrington;
Hetton Lyons Country Park - purpose-built cycle track around
lake. Bridleways link into park from south-west, east and
north-east. Stephenson Trail links from the west;
James Steel Park - runs either side of the River Wear in Washington.
The C2C runs through the northern park and bridleways link from the west from Penshaw and The General's Wood;
Princess Anne Park - linear park in Washington, bisected by the C2C west of Biddick Lane;
Silksworth Recreation Centre - lakes, tennis, astro-turf and skiing.
National Route 1 runs through east side of park, Stephenson Trail runs through west;
Tunstall Hills - SSSI and classic viewpoint of City and coast. The main access is off Leechmere Road.
A cycleway links this access to National Route 1.
