Thousands of cyclists complete the C2C route from
the Irish Sea at Whitehaven to Sunderland every year. |
 |
| Nearly all cycle the route from west to east to
benefit from the prevailing south-westerly winds. This route has been improved in Sunderland and now follows the north side of the River Wear, connecting to the Washington Wildfowl and Wetlands
Centre, Sunderland AFC's Stadium of Light and the Marine Activities
Centre.
At the Stadium of Light there are two route options, one via the
river's edge
and the other via the Stadium entrance, which also offers the option
to cycle into the City Centre.
The route is well signposted in the City and is easy to follow along the former mineral railway lines up into the
Pennines. The cycleway is also off-road from the Sunderland coast westwards for forty miles!
