The C2C tourist route will be open and signed linking straight into Sunderland by 1st June 2005.  The route will link Sunderland to Barrow-in-Furness on the Irish Sea, with a spur option to the start of the original C2C at Whitehaven.  The route is part of the National Cycle Network and has been designated Regional Route 20, indicated on a blue background on signs.

This will be another spectacular cycling route, passing through Durham, Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle before climbing to England's highest pub (Tan Hill Inn >1700ft).  Further west, the route passes through the stunning scenery of the Howgills before reaching Kendal, the south Lakes, and the sea at Walney Island, Barrow.

Sunderland's section of route will follow the existing cycleways from Roker Pier and the City Centre to Doxford International, then cross Warden Law to Hetton-le-Hole along the Stephenson Trail, before following the former Sunderland to Durham Elvet railway line via Pittington to Durham City.  Like the C2C and NR1 in the City, this route will feel relatively 'rural', crossing Green Belt to the west and following tree-lined railway paths in the central part of the City.

The route will help to complete circular cycle options within the City, and will importantly link to key employment centres at Doxford, the City Centre, Hetton Lyons, Belmont and Dragonville, plus a spur to Rainton Bridge.
