A planning application has to be made to the Local Planning Authority on specific forms and the proposals shown on plans drawn to scale.  There is a simplified form available for proposed extensions to dwellings, while a detailed form should be completed for larger scale developments.  Separate forms and consents are required for works to Listed Buildings, demolition in Conservation Areas, the erection of advertisements, and works to protected trees.  The applications are processed by the Development Control section (DC) within the Development and Regeneration Services.

If you are not sure whether planning permission is required for alterations you are considering please send details of the works to DC section using a Preliminary Enquiry Form PDF Icon(PDF56kb) (PE1) which is available on the website.

Who is Consulted

The DC section aims to make sure that everyone who may be affected by a development proposal will know that an application has been made.  This will be done by one or more of the following:

  • writing to neighbours

  • putting up notices on or near the site

  • advertising in the local paper

  • publishing a list on our website

Can I Comment on a Planning Application

You are free to comment in writing on applications by letter to the Development Control Section, Sunderland City Council, Civic Centre PO Box 102, Sunderland SR2 7DN or by email to dc@sunderland.gov.uk or by clicking here.  Please quote the application reference number on any comments.  All comments are considered as part of the decision-making process.  In some circumstances you may be able to speak at a meeting.  There's advice on this in the leaflet called 'Have your Say'
