The City Council has long
since recognised the importance of partnership with its citizens and key
agencies in the City in the realisation of its vision for the future of
Sunderland.
As the only City-wide
democratically elected authority with wide-ranging responsibilities and
experience, the Council is in a unique position to bring together local partners
for action in areas important to the people of Sunderland.
Formal and informal
partnerships have been formed to tackle the key issues of the environment,
community safety, economic regeneration, education and training, housing, health
and welfare.
The City of Sunderland
Partnership was established in July 1994.
It comprises most of the major City-wide public agencies in Sunderland,
together with private and voluntary and community sector representatives. Its main role to date has been the direction and
co-ordination of regeneration activity in the City, including the successful
bidding for over £100m of Government and European funding.
However, the role of the City
of Sunderland Partnership is changing and widening.
The Government is giving
partnerships a key role both in the modernisation of local government and in its
commitment to strengthening regional democracy.
It requires all areas to
establish Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs), through which important
strategic planning documents, such as community strategies, and many new funding
regimes, such as the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, will be channelled.
It is therefore anticipated that in the near future the City of
Sunderland Partnership will become the official Local Strategic Partnership for
the City.
