Councillor Mary Smith - Mayor of the City of Sunderland 2008-2009

Councillor Mary Smith was born in Hendon. Councillor Smith was educated at Chester Road Girls' School. This was followed by evening classes at the then Sunderland Technical College, where she studied maths and chemistry, in line with her career as a pharmacy technician. She was first elected to Sunderland City Council in 1996 representing the Pallion Ward. Following boundary changes, Councillor Smith was selected to represent the Hendon Ward. As well as being a member of the East Area Committee, she also serves on the Heath and Well Being Committee and other social services panels.

Councillor Smith married her husband Raymond, who was a sea going engineer, on February 28, 1959 at St Mary’s Church.

They have two daughters, Susan and Lesley, and six grown up grandsons.

Mayoral Charities

The charities chosen by Councillor Smith for her Mayoral year are the Alzheimer’s Association and The Grace House Children's Hospice Appeal.

Duties

The Mayor's civic role is to act as the City's foremost citizen and to carry out ceremonial duties on behalf of the City, such as official openings of buildings, and presiding at official functions.  She acts as the City's Civic host to visiting dignitaries and other delegates to the City.  Her official duties include chairing meetings of the Full Council and witnessing the opening of tenders.
