Councillor Dennis Richardson - Mayor of the City of Sunderland 2009-2010

Councillor Dennis Richardson - Mayor of the City of Sunderland 2009-2010
I was born in Washington on 4th July, 1943 and moved to Mount Pleasant, Penshaw shortly afterwards.  From there we moved to Fatfield.  I was educated at Fatfield Primary School, later to become Fatfield Modern.

I started an apprenticeship at the age of 15 as a Fitter and Turner at Joseph Cook Sons & Co. (1930) Ltd at Washington where I remained until I was 22.  I met my wife Anne there in 1961.  She was in the wages office.  We married in 1963.

We have two children, Michael 45 and Suzanne 38, we also have two grandchildren, Christopher 20 and Amy 17.

I am a member of Amicus and have been since serving my apprenticeship, it was previously known as AEU.  I have worked as a Maintenance Fitter ever since finishing my apprenticeship, mostly, in heavy engineering but also in bakeries.  My final job was as a Maintenance Engineer at Hydro Aluminium at Birtley, where I worked for 26 years.  While there I was shop steward, until I was made redundant in November, 1999.

Anne and I live in Fence Houses, we have lived there since 1983.

I became a Magistrate in 1997 and was sworn in at Sunderland Council Chamber in 1998, I was elected to Sunderland Council in 2004 as a Councillor for Houghton Ward.
