Councillor Paul Watson became Leader of the Council in May 2008, after previously serving as Deputy Leader since May 2006. Prior to that, he was Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Community Cohesion. Councillor Watson was born, and has lived all his life in Sunderland. After serving his time as an apprentice shipwright at Sunderland Shipbuilders, he was made redundant in 1981 and has been self-employed ever since. Married to Susan, Councillor Watson studied law at Teesside University gaining an Honours Degree in 1998. He represents the Pallion Ward. |

Duties The Leader of the Council, as Leader of the controlling majority political group, Chairs the Cabinet and acts as the Council’s lead political spokesman. He represents the Council nationally on a number of influential political organisations such as the Association of North East Councils and the Local Government Association. The Leader is also the Cabinet’s Portfolio Holder for Modernisation of Local Government, Partnerships, External Affairs, Regional Matters and Community Safety.
