A surcharge is levied on non-residents of the City of Sunderland i.e. those persons who do not contribute to the service via the City's Council Tax.

Fees for Cremation Services are increased by one third, fees for Burial Services and Purchase of Graves are doubled.

Interment Fees and Cremation Fees

Non resident surcharge will apply where the deceased was resident outside of the City at the time of their death unless:-

i) The deceased had moved to receive specialist care which was not available in the City. 

ii) Death occurred within 9 months of the deceased moving out of the City. 

iii)  The deceased was the owner (or the spouse of the owner) of the grave. 

iv) The deceased was a serving member of the Armed Forces living in temporary accommodation, whose parents are still residents of the City.

Grave Purchase Fees

Non resident surcharge will apply to all grave purchases where the Purchaser does not reside in the City of the Sunderland unless:-

i)  The Purchaser had moved to receive specialist care which was not available in the City. 

ii) The purchase occurs within 9 months of the Purchaser moving out of the City. 

iii) The grave is being purchased as part of the funeral arrangements of a deceased resident of the City 

iv) The deceased was a serving member of the Armed Forces living in temporary accommodation, whose parents are still residents of the City.
