Charter for the Bereaved

Why has Sunderland adopted the Charter for the Bereaved?

The council adopted the Charter for the Bereaved in 1999 as a mark of our commitment to improving standards in the Cemeteries and Crematorium Service.

The Charter for the Bereaved is a national service standard developed by the Institute of Burial and Cremation Administration, and as Charter members we are required to provide the 33 'rights' detailed in the Charter document. These set standards for the quality of service and open-ness of information on the range of services provided by the Cemeteries and Crematorium Service. However we regard the Charter rights as a minimum, and our aim is to provide a service which exceeds these basic requirements.

As part of our Charter standard a range of information leaflets has been prepared covering all aspects of bereavement. These are available on-line or can be obtained from the Cemeteries Office
