You will need to show the superintendent registrar documentary evidence of your
name, age and nationality - preferably your passport. If this is not
available a birth certificate or Home Office travel document. You will
also be asked to provide evidence of your address - a driving licence or recent
utility bill.
If you have been married or registered a civil partnership before, you will
also need to produce documents that confirm you are now free to marry.
These include:
- a divorce decree absolute or final order of civil partnership dissolution
bearing the court's original stamp
- the death certificate of your former husband, wife or civil partner.
To obtain a copy, if granted through an English or Welsh court see divorces
and dissolutions
And, If you are subject to immigration control, you will also need to produce
documentary evidence to the superintendent registrar to confirm that you satisfy
the new eligibility requirements introduced in February 2005.
Depending on your individual circumstances, other documents may be required.
Your local superintendent registrar will be able to advise you.
Please Note:
- You will be required to bring originals of all documents, as photocopies
are not accepted
- Your marriage cannot go ahead unless the legal formalities have been
completed
- Notices of marriage must be given in person to the superintendent
registrar by you and your partner. No one else can do so on your
behalf.
- Where an advance booking for a marriage has been made, it is essential
that a formal notice is given to the superintendent, once you are legally
able to do so. Registration officers have a statutory duty to report
any marriage they suspect has been arranged for the sole purpose of evading
the statutory immigration controls.
