Accessible Homes Service |
|
Sunderland City Council has a duty to assess the housing needs for those people with
disabilities living in its area. This assessment applies to both owner
occupied and tenanted properties and is carried out by the Council's
Occupational Therapy Service. Following assessment, the Occupational
Therapy Service will make recommendations for alterations or adaptations
which will enable those identified as needing help to live safely and
comfortably in their own homes.
The Accessible Homes Service can provide assistance with adaptations to enable better access and mobility into and around the home. This could include ramps, stairlifts, hoists and level access showers. In certain circumstances it may be necessary to extend an existing property, but in most cases the alterations and adaptations will be carried out within the existing dwelling. The cost of the alternations may be financed by Disabled Facilities Grant in accordance with the Housing Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 and the Regulatory Reform Order 2002. Loans or equity release schemes may also be available to assist with financing adaptations. For further details or enquiries you can email: AdultDirectorate@ssd.sunderland.gov.uk
