Sheltered Housing

Sheltered Housing caters specifically for older people and allows them to live independently with a range of facilities. Every scheme offers different services but all have a resident warden. Many schemes have controlled door-entry, a shared lounge, laundry and even a guest bedroom that visitors can use for a small charge.

All of the council sheltered housing schemes are linked to the Community Care Alarm service.

There are currently ten council sheltered housing schemes in various areas of the city.

In addition to these schemes, there are also a number of sheltered schemes, which are provided by other Registered Social Landlords in the city. These are as follows:

Anchor Housing Association Tel: 0191 270 2277
Cheviot Housing Association Tel: 0191 564 0070
Housing 21 Tel: 01274 744910
Home Housing Association Tel: 0191 564 2575
Two Castles Housing Association Tel: 0191 261 4774

Please contact the Housing Associations for information regarding these schemes or contact the Housing Advice Service in the Civic Centre. Alternatively, you can visit your local housing office and enquire about other properties which are designed with older people in mind. There are a number of bungalows and flats in all areas of the city, which are suitable for older people.
