The Learning Disabilities Service helps people who have a learning disability, their carers,
family and friends, by looking at their needs and planning services to support them.
We do this by talking things through with the person and their carer(s),
collecting information and agreeing with them what might be done. This is
called an assessment.
There is a booklet available called 'What is an Assessment?' (
248kb) which will tell you more about what is involved in the assessment.
These services could include:
Day Services which provide support for people to take part in a range of activities, either in buildings provided by
Health, Housing and Adult Services, or within the wider community in which they live. Referral to services is through the Social Work Team at Broadway House.
- Bishopwearmouth Horticultural Nursery provides social, learning and therapeutic opportunities through horticulture to people who have a disability. There are 25 places provided each day to people who have a physical or learning disability.
- Fulwell Day Centre offers a wide range of opportunities to support people with learning disabilities and their families. The overall aim is to promote people's independence and ability to make decisions for themselves and, where appropriate, increase knowledge about employment opportunities. The

centre which has been specially adapted and equipped to provide this.
- No Limits Theatre Company is Sunderland's touring theatre company for people with learning disabilities. The

- Washington Multi-Purpose Centre offers a wide range of opportunities to support people with learning or physical disabilities and their families. The overall aim is to help people increase their knowledge about employment opportunities and promote their independence and ability to make decisions for themselves. The
centre does this by providing opportunities for people to maintain existing skills and develop new ones. The
centre provides 130 places per day. 30 places are for people who need very high levels of support. There is a suite of rooms within the
centre which has been specially adapted and equipped to provide this.
- Workline is a supported employment service which helps people with disabilities find a paid job. This is done by working with local employers to make sure that people with disabilities are not overlooked when they are recruiting staff. Workline will also work with people to make sure that they gain the skills and confidence to get and keep a job.

Short Breaks Some people rely on a regular carer most of the time for different kinds of personal care and support. Sometimes it is important for people and their carers to have a break from each other. Short breaks provide the chance for this to happen. Referral to services is through the Social Work Team at Broadway House.
- The Close is an elegant Victorian House about 200 yards from the seafront in the Roker area of Sunderland. It has 10 bedrooms and provides short breaks for people with learning disabilities.
- Doric View is a homely base for a short break service which aims to provide guests with a flexible and varied range of individually tailored opportunities. Each person's stay is planned with them to suit their individual requirements. This will enable every guest to take part in a variety of activities within the house and the locality which are appropriate to their needs and preferences. The house is a purpose-built bungalow in the Penshaw area.
Residential and Supported Tenancies There are 25 Residential Homes located throughout the City, which have 24-hour staff support, for small groups of 3-7 people with learning disabilities. There is also an Outreach Support Service offering planned support at specific levels for people who want to take the next step and move on to live in their own tenancies within the community.

Sunderland Telecare
The City Council provides a phone alarm system to enable older people, the vulnerable, and people with physical disabilities and their carers to have independence in their own home. The system, operated by a phone in the home, provides a reassuring link with a community care assistant 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Sunderland Telecare lets anyone who is linked to the alarm system contact a community care assistant or experienced person immediately if there is an emergency.
This person is trained to assess the situation and contact a mobile community care assistant or the emergency services if necessary.
