Volunteering with Sunderland City Council Adult Services:

Volunteering in the U.K. is playing a major part in all aspects of our diverse communities.  Hospitals, schools, voluntary and community groups, faith organisations, environmental agencies and public sector bodies rely upon the services provided by volunteers.  There are approximately 22 million adults who are involved in formal volunteering activities each year.

The Volunteering Programme in Sunderland City Council, Adult Services has been in existence since 2000.  It aims to utilise the skills and expertise of our volunteers to support people with a learning disability or mental ill-health so that they can live a full and active life within their local community.  As a volunteer you can therefore make a significant difference to someone’s quality of life.

Volunteering is also a great way to develop personal skills, build confidence and meet people.  It also offers an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and access appropriate training opportunities.  A volunteer can also request a reference for employment after six months. Here are some of the things our volunteers and service users have told us about their volunteering experience:

  • 'I was able to access really useful training which enabled me to develop knowledge and skills that have helped when I've been applying for jobs.'
  • 'Mary's confidence and abilities continue to grow and develop and I feel very honoured to have, even in a small way, taken part in this.'
  • 'I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and appreciate all the valuable support and guidance I have received.'
  • ‘The whole volunteering experience has given me opportunities that have helped with my career development.'
  • 'I met my volunteer befriender every week and we did something different.  I met lots of new people and was able to move closer to achieving goals set out in my personal plan and life map.'

We currently have a number of volunteering opportunities within the Learning Disability Service and the Community Mental Health Partnership
