Mental illness, mental ill health and emotional distress are all words used
to describe people who have mental health problems. Mental health, like
physical health, involves a wide range of problems and complaints, from
relatively mild conditions to severe mental illness. Mental illness is very
common and this means that at some point in their life most people will
experience, or have family or friends who experience mental illness.
